APPLYING FOR A PROVISIONAL LICENCE
Before you book your first practical lesson or take your Theory test, you are required to apply for a provisional licence. You can either apply online which costs £34 or pick up a D1 Form from your local post office and apply by post which costs £43.
You can apply for your provisional licence before your 17th birthday. You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old and be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away. However your provisional licence would not become valid until you are seventeen to drive a car.

You’ll get a confirmation email from DVLA after you’ve applied. You might be asked to take part in research by email, but you can opt out.
Your licence should arrive within one week if you apply online. It may take longer if DVLA need to make additional checks.

Applying for a Theory Test
Once you have received your Provisional Licence you can apply for your theory test.
You must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months before the day you take your theory or driving test.

Applying for a Practical Test
To take the practical test you must hold a provisional licence and have passed your Theory test. Before you book ask your driving instructor’s personal reference number if you want to check they’re available.

The fee for a car test is £62.00 weekdays and £75.00 for weekends and weekday evenings.
You must present the following documents before taking the practical test;
If you do not provide the documents on the day of your test, the DVSA will not allow your test to go ahead and this will involve you losing your fee.
