Becoming a Driving Instructor…

If this sound like you, then why don’t you train to become a driving instructor with strive2drive driving school.

You need to be over 21 years of age, and have held a valid UK or EU driving licence for at least 3½ years and have less than 6 penalty points on your licence.  You will also need to be able to read a number plate from 90ft / 27.5m.  You'll need a commitment to learning and an ability to relate well to your pupils, keeping calm, maintaining control and generating trust.

Firstly you must have a CRB check.

Applicants who intend to start the ADI qualifying process will need to have a Criminal Record Check, this is obtained FREE OF CHARGE through the DSA contractor, Capita Recruitment; on 0870 850 2455.

They will ask you 5 simple questions to ensure your driving licence is in order and you have no serious convictions which may prevent you from becoming a driving instructor.  If everything is in order they will send you an application pack for you to complete and return the forms back to them. You will then be sent a unique reference number which you will need to start the application process for the first exam.

PART 1 - Theory & Hazard Perception test:

The theory part of the test consists of 100 multiple choice questions.  You must achieve at least 85% to pass the theory test.  The Hazard Perception Test will prepare you to identify hazards; there are 14 video clips with a duration of about one minute each.  The clips feature various types of hazards such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions.  You must score 57 points out of 75 to pass the test.  You must pass both tests to move on to the next part.

PART 2 - The Driving Ability test:

This is an on the road course where all training takes place in the car.  We teach and refine your driving skills to ensure you reach the high standards of the Driving Standards Agency.  It is a test of a driver’s eyesight and skills on the road.  A high standard of competence is required, as you would expect from a qualified driving instructor.

The test is about one hour and the examiner is looking for : 

• Expert handling of the controls,
• Use of correct road procedure,
• Anticipation of the actions of other road users and taking the appropriate action,
• Sound judgement of distance, speed and timing,
• Consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users,
• Driving in an environmentally friendly manner, 

And you will be tested on various sets of manoeuvres.  These will all be covered in your on-road training.

PART 3 - Instructional Ability test:

This part of the training prepares you for the test in instruction, which is an essential skill for any Driving Instructor.  There are 10 basic scenarios used in the test.  The training takes place in the car and consists of 40 hours.

Once the 40 hour training course is completed you may be awarded a Trainee Licence, now the training you have received really kicks in.  A Trainee Licence will allow you to work with strive2drive Driving School and give paid driving tuition before taking the Part 3 test.  This Licence has a duration of six months.  Practical experience gained in this way will be essential in preparing you for the Part 3 test.  You will be also earning whilst learning.  While on the Trainee Licence you must complete an additional 20 hours of training.
